The dramatic mezzo-soprano was named by both BBC Music Magazine and the Observer as "a rising star", and the Financial Times as the "Face to Watch in Opera". A former BBC New Generation Artist, she is a graduate of Cambridge University and the Royal College of Music, and is the recipient of numerous awards. She has appeared in opera at the Teatro alla Scala, Salzburg Festival, Bayerische Staatsoper, Festival d'Aix en Provence, Opera de Lille, Beijing Festival, Baltic Sea Festival, Scottish Opera and Opera North.
Her roles include Fricka, Waltraute, Second Norn, Wellgunde, Mrs Grose, Leda, Gaia, Lady de Hautdesert, Jocasta, Hedwige, Lucretia, Margret, Dido, Hänsel, Mrs Noye, Third Lady, Mrs Herring, Mrs Sedley, Giovanna Seymour and Agrippina. She has performed with many of the world's greatest orchestras in repertoire spanning the centuries, from Bach's St Matthew Passion with the Dallas Symphony and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestras, both under Jaap Van Zweden, Mahler's Third Symphony under Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra, Schumann's Faustszenen with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester and Wiener Symphoniker Orchestras under Daniel Harding, as Jocaste in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex under Sir John Eliot Gardiner with the Berlin Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras (released as an LSO Live disc), and Adès's Totentanz under Thomas Adès with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Maestros she has performed under include Kirill Petrenko, Sir Andrew Davis, Donald Runnicles, Kent Nagano, Ingo Metzmacher, Alondra de la Parra, Vasily Petrenko, Bernard Labadie, Osmo Vänskä, Kiril Karabits, Juanjo Mena, Dan Ettinger, Vasily Sinaisky, Thomas Søndergård, Thomas Dausgaard, Leonard Slatkin and Harry Bicket. She made her solo recital debut at the Wigmore Hall broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Her extensive discography includes Anthony Payne's arrangement of Vaughan Williams' Four Last Songs with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins for Albion Records, which she premiered at the BBC Proms.
Jennifer's engagements in 2016-2017 include Mrs Grose in Britten's Turn of the Screw in a new production at La Scala (Eschenbach/Holten), Hedwige in Rossini's Guillaume Tell at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Wellgunde in Wagner's Das Rheingold with Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé (to be released on disc), Ghost in Birtwistle's The Last Supper with Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Pasqualita in John Adams' Dr Atomic with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer, Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri with Daniele Gatti and the Accademia Santa Cecilia, Verdi's Requiem and Mahler's Third Symphony with Leonard Slatkin and the Orchestre National de Lyon, Schumann's Faustszenen with the Michael Schønwandt and Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Elgar's Sea Pictures with Jeffrey Tate and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and with Jun Märkl and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Mahler's Rückert Lieder with Thomas Søndergård and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius with Paul McCreesh and the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Dvorak Requiem with Jiří Bělohlávek and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Elgar's Music Makers with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Bach's B Minor Mass with the BBC Singers, Tippett's Child of our Time with Ryan Wigglesworth and the Hallé Orchestra, Beethoven Mass in C with Nicholas McGegan and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and she will appear in recital with Joseph Middleton at Leeds Lieder.
Pianist Joseph Middleton specialises in the art of song accompaniment and chamber music and has been highly acclaimed within this field. Described in the BBC Music Magazine as "one of the brightest stars in the world of song and Lieder", he has also been labeled "the cream of the new generation" by The Times and "a perfect accompanist" by Opera Now. He performs and records with many of the world's finest singers in major music centres across Europe, the Americas and Far East. Joseph is Director of Leeds Lieder, a Professor at his alma mater the Royal Academy of Music, and holds the position of Musician in Residence at Pembroke College Cambridge, where he curates an imaginative song recital series as well as directing the University's Lieder Scheme.
Joseph enjoys recitals with internationally established singers including Sir Thomas Allen, Ian Bostridge, Benjamin Appl, Sarah Connolly, Lucy Crowe, Iestyn Davies, Wolfgang Holzmair, Christiane Karg, Katarina Karnéus, Dame Felicity Lott, Christopher Maltman, John Mark Ainsley, Ann Murray, Mark Padmore, Joan Rodgers, Amanda Roocroft, Kate Royal, Matthew Rose, Carolyn Sampson and Roderick Williams. He regularly collaborates with rising stars from the younger generation and in 2012 he formed the Myrthen Ensemble to further explore lesser-known song repertoire with regular duo partners Mary Bevan, Clara Mouriz, Allan Clayton and Marcus Farnsworth.
Recent seasons have taken him to London's Wigmore Hall, Royal Opera House and Royal Festival Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Köln Philharmonie, Zürich Tonhalle and Luxembourg Philharmonie. He made his New York debut at the Alice Tully Hall accompanying Sarah Connolly in a recital described in the New York Times as "superlative... everything a song recital should be". Elsewhere in the Americas he has appeared at Toronto's Koerner Hall, Vancouver's Chan Centre, San Francisco's Nourse Theatre and Chicago's Ravinia Festival. He is a regular guest at Festivals in Aix-en-Provence, Aldeburgh, Brighton, Cheltenham, Edinburgh, Munich, Oxford Lieder, Stuttgart and West Cork.
Joseph's 2016/2017 plans include his début BBC Prom with Iestyn Davies and Carolyn Sampson; three US recital tours with Kate Royal, Sarah Connolly and Carolyn Sampson taking him to New York (Park Avenue Armory & Alice Tully Hall), San Francisco's Herbst Theatre and Atlanta's Spivey Hall; as well as recitals with Christopher Maltman in Strasbourg and deSingel Antwerp, Katarina Karnéus in Gothenburg, Simon Keenlyside and Ian Bostridge in Leeds; and European Myrthen Ensemble débuts at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. His appearances at the Wigmore Hall include recitals with Sarah Connolly and Clara Mouriz (BBC Lunchtime series) and with Carolyn Sampson. He has also programmed a 4-part Mahler series for BBC Radio 3.
His critically acclaimed discography includes "Fleurs" with Carolyn Sampson for BIS Records (nominated for a Gramophone Award & Radio France's Disc of the Month); and, for Champs Hill Records: "Nocturnal Variations" with Ruby Hughes (Recording of the Month – BBC Music Magazine), "Elgar in Sussex" with Dame Felicity Lott, "Tell me the Truth about Love" with Amanda Roocroft, "This other Eden" with Kitty Whately (Shortlisted for Best Disc of 2015 – American Record Guide), the Lieder of Ludwig Thuille with Sophie Bevan and Jennifer Johnston and the complete Purcell/Britten realizations with Ruby Hughes, Allan Clayton and Matthew Rose. The Myrthen Ensemble's début disc – "Songs to the Moon" – was recently released on Signum Records. Joseph has a special relationship with the BBC through his work with their New Generation Artists Scheme and as such has made numerous live broadcasts of solo, chamber and song repertoire for BBC Radio 3, including frequently being invited to curate his own weeklong series of lunchtime concerts.
Born in Gloucestershire, Joseph graduated with an MPhil from the University of Birmingham, studied piano on an EMI Scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music and went on to win the accompanist prizes at the Wigmore Hall International Song, Kathleen Ferrier, Richard Tauber, Royal Over-Seas League and Geoffrey Parsons Awards. He lives near London with his family.

The School of Music at the University of Leeds is one of the largest and most diverse academic music departments in the country. Leeds is a research-intensive Russell Group University and it aims to develop exceptional graduates who will make a major impact upon global society. In Music we have an outstanding reputation for research, and the School brings together internationally recognised scholars, performers, and composers. Students have regular one-to-one contact with staff members through our personal tutoring scheme and, most significantly for many of our graduates, through the final-year dissertation. This major piece of work encourages students to engage with active research in the discipline, with individual projects and concerns pursued with the close support of expert academic staff.
The School has a very active performance life, including but not limited to the free lunchtime concert series. The spectacular Clothworkers' Centenary Concert Hall is just one of many venues where leading international artists from many genres and styles perform. The School and University collaborate with a range of prestigious arts organisations: we host BBC Radio 3 concerts and the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition as well as enjoying a close partnership with Opera North.
The School is located near the heart of the campus, very close to the University's three major academic libraries and only a few minutes' walk from the city libraries, galleries and concert venues. There are many student residences on or close to campus and Leeds University Union is nearby, in the centre of the campus.
