Katarina Leyman: Solar Flares – Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Santtu-Matias Rouvali (HD 1080p)

The Sun, the bringer of life can be looked upon from many angles. The orchestral piece Solar Flares is mainly an interpretation of the physical object, the sun with attempts to capture the image of the Corona, its structure and constant activity and transfer it into music.

I've been inspired by solar events such as Sunspots, Faculaes, and the Solar Wind that reaches far out in the Universe and most of all by Solar Flares, that has lent the piece its name and that can be violent jet ejections or smaller quicker flares and that sometimes make the most fantastic curves reminding of enormous handles.

My Sun, the dynamo in its most mature phase, is a positive force and life bringer. As an antithesis to this one can emagine a black hole, a dead sun, a destructive force that sucks the energy out of everything that comes its way. Here is a link to Bluebeard who could be imaged as a black hole and maybe then the love between Romeo and Juliet could be likened by the newly born sun, a positive force with a destructive potential.

The Swedish composer Katarina Leyman (b. 1963), originally from the Island Orust on the west coast of Sweden, now lives and works in Stockholm. She studied composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm 2002-2005. During the years 1989-1995 she studied in Boston, USA where she took a Master's degree in composition at New England Conservatory of Music 1995 and dual Bachelor degrees in composition and film music composition at Berklee College of Music 1993.

Apart from music, art has always been important to her and for a period of years Katarina studied painting and sculpture at different art schools in Stockholm. Color and texture, shape and movement are often starting points, and form-building elements in her music with the attempt to transfer the various dimensions to music. Ideas for compositions can come from various natural phenomena such as fish moving in shoals, DNA chains, water molecules, volcanic activity and clouds. An early inspiration and way in to the modern and abstract art expression, was her father, the sculptor Fred Leyman's airy and rhythmic, often monumental compositions of stainless steel, iron and wood.

Katarina often work in close collaboration with various musicians and compose predominantly orchestral and chamber music.
